Remembering Injustice Together
Join us in honoring the experiences of Japanese Americans during WWII through art and reflection.
Never Forget
During World War II, a fearful American government forcibly rounded up and interned 120,000 American citizens of Japanese descent, wrongly thinking these Americans would remain loyal to the government of Japan.
The internment camps blatantly violated the principles and values that America strives to uphold, including liberty, justice, and equality for all. The forced relocation and imprisonment of Japanese Americans based on their ancestry alone was a grave injustice that profoundly impacted individuals, families, and entire communities. If we want to work towards building a more just society, it's important to remember and acknowledge this dark chapter in American history and ensure that such violations are never repeated. This remembrance project is a small but powerful initiative in raising awareness, fostering empathy, and honoring the experiences of those affected.
Our Project
The Analy Zen Garden will be created in a highly visible location on the Analy High School campus, just outside the school library. Elements of Japanese culture will be incorporated into this quiet and contemplative space. Above the garden, the mural will serve our community as a window for a glimpse into the difficult experience of the Japanese-Americans during WWII. Working together in harmony, the Analy Zen Garden and mural will be a space and a memorial to visibly teach our mission and bring this injustice to the public’s attention. Additionally, in taking care of the Analy Zen Garden, we seek to symbolize the admirable actions of the Sebastopolpeople and those of especially Sonoma County taking care of Japanese-American property when the latter were interned. When community is strong, good can be done even in a time of a big harm.
